Why Treatment Centers and Sober Homes Need Drug Detecting Dogs

The heroin epidemic has devastated this country for years, and is only getting worse. The introduction of Carfentanil (An opioid 10,000 times stronger than morphine) has led to a 400% increase in annual overdose deaths, bringing last year’s total to 64,000. Unfortunately, we are unable to accurately track non-fatal overdoses, but can easily assume those numbers to be in the hundreds of thousands annually.

As a result of this epidemic, thousands of rehabilitation clinics and sober living communities have opened across the country. These businesses intake and discharge clients by the tens of thousands each month, and with that massive movement of recovering addicts comes unthinkable liabilities. Each day, these businesses do human sweeps of new client’s personal belongings, search their premises, and develop new policies and procedures to prevent illicit substances from entering their facilities. Unfortunately, as with any task, there is an element of human error.

Here's a test: Google "drug rehab overdose" or "sober home overdose" and you will find page after page of businesses whose policies and procedures have failed them. Unfortunately, through those failures, business’s reputations have been tarnished, businesses have been forced to close, and worst of all, lives have been lost.  In each of these cases, additional steps could have been taken to easily avoid a tragedy, but they were regrettably overlooked or disregarded.

For the aforementioned reasons, Drug Detecting Dogs was created. Our goals are simple:

  • Provide an additional layer of support so local drug rehabs and sober living communities can ensure their facilities are properly cleared of illicit materials
  • Seek to create a deterrent for clients that lets them know any substances brought on property WILL BE FOUND
  • Helps our local facilities to reduce labor hours, increase employee productivity, and most importantly of all: reduce their liabilities.

A German Shepard's sense of smell is roughly 100,000 times stronger than that of a human, which allows them to easily find narcotics and/or explosive devices, without disrupting operations. Thanks to their amazing sense of smell, our canines can find substances in area's humans cannot and can accomplish this task with amazing efficiency.

The substance abuse and mental health industry has been inundated with fraud, malpractice, and trafficking charges. This has led reputable facilities through a constant struggle of proving their legitimacy. Reputable business owners lose sleep at night over what an overdose would do to their business’ reputation, even if they took every step possible to avoid one. Unfortunately, in this field you are guilty until proven innocent, and it’s imperative for the legitimate business owners to add an additional layer of protection. Drug Detecting Dogs are not only more efficient, but ensure with the highest percentage of likelihood that your facility is free of harmful narcotics. Local Rehabs and Sober Living Homes use Drug Detection Dogs as a means of reducing their liability and, most importantly, preventing lives lost.
